Philips is introducing a new line of TVs for 2023, including OLED displays with microlenses and more affordable MiniLED TVs. What TV models will be included in this line? How are 2023 Philips TVs different from last year’s models? Which TVs will use the new technology?

Philips OLED+908

The star of the show for many home theater fans will be the new flagship OLED+908 series. These WOLED models feature the new Micro Lens Array technology first introduced by LG and Panasonic at CES 2023. The principle of MLA is to add a layer of tiny lenses to an OLED panel to improve the focus of the light emitted by each OLED pixel.

This results in a huge 70% jump in brightness over previous conventional Philips WOLED TVs . In fact, Philips is ready to say that the OLED+ 908s will reach a peak brightness of 2100 nits. This is in line with the brightness peaks reported by the other two MLA OLED TVs introduced to date.

Philips claims that the META OLED+908 series panels also offer better viewing angles, even compared to the brand’s previous OLED TVs. Plus, they’ll use less power despite the huge extra brightness. Philips calls its new MLA-toting technology “META”.

It looks like MLA technology will be available on all three 55-, 65-, and 77-inch OLED+908 models. The new panels will be based on yet another upgrade of the Philips P5 imaging system, which has reached the 7th generation. The key features of this new processor will be an improved version of the Ambient Intelligence system introduced in 2022,

This system constantly analyzes the image reproduction to compensate for changes in ambient lighting conditions in the room. The new version uses an “XYZ” color sensor that now measures and compensates for the color temperature of lighting in a room to provide more accurate and efficient real-time white point changes.

Philips has further improved the Super Resolution feature for its first new 2023 TVs. Super Resolution combined the usual exceptional edge definition of this processing system with richer, more intelligently localized detail reproduction in key parts of enhanced screen objects to give them a more natural 3D appearance.

Philips’ latest collaboration with UK hi-fi brand Bowers & Wilkins is the 80W 3.1 sound system used in OLED+908 TVs with META OLED panels. This soundbar consists of six front speakers that are aimed directly at the viewer for a more direct, impactful and immersive sound.

In addition, the system has one powerful rear-mounted subwoofer. The body of the OLED+908 speaker is covered in Kvadrat Audiomix fabric, while the rest of the body features an exceptionally subtle dark metal finish and a new open frame black desktop stand. The OLED+908 remote control has also been radically redesigned.

Now it is equipped with a backlight connected to the built-in motion detector. After the user picks it up, the buttons on the remote control light up. The remote is powered by a rechargeable battery via USB-C. On Philips OLED+ 908 TVs, HDMI ports can now support Dolby Vision at 4K@120Hz at full 48Gbps.

That’s enough to handle 4:4:4 chroma subsampling . There’s also low-latency auto-switching between game and auto modes. Support for VRR from 40Hz to 120Hz has arrived, including systems such as FreeSync Premium and Nvidia G-Sync , as well as a basic HDMI VRR system.

The last key new feature of the OLED+908 is that Philips is finally moving from Android TV to the easier-to-use Google TV platform. Philips claims it has simplified its well-known labyrinthine menu structure for new 2023 models.

Philips OLED808

The second announcement from Philips is the 2023 OLED808 series of OLED TVs. Although Philips has yet to announce pricing, past experience shows that they will be significantly cheaper than OLED+908. So it’s no surprise that 55-inch, 65-inch, and 77-inch TVs don’t feature META with MLA panels, but OLED EX panels. .

However, even the EX panels are significantly brighter than the base WOLEDs. You should expect OLED808s to be at least as bright as last year’s 1000+ nit OLED807 lineup. The OLED808 will feature a new version of the 7th generation Philips P5 AI image processor, the same gaming support as the OLED+908, and a 70W 2.1-channel sound system.

According to Philips, this sound system benefits from a more accurate digital crossover, more precise distribution to the two-way (left and right) speakers, and a dedicated rear-facing triple ring speaker. In addition, the system is also supported by four passive radiators.

Philips OLED808 TVs are available in most cases with desktop center stands with swivel necks and brushed chrome finish. The OLED808 is also equipped with Philips’ latest and most advanced Ambilight system with a zero-bezel function that allows images on the screen to blend more seamlessly with effects.

The only exception to this design is the 77-inch model, which replaces the center stand with a pair of low-profile mounting feet. Philips OLED808 TVs have become even better than their predecessors after switching from Android TV to Google TV.

A 42-inch model will also be added to the OLED808 lineup in addition to the 48, 55, 65 and 77-inch screen sizes that were in the 2022 OLED 807 lineup. However, 42- and 48-inch OLED808 TVs will not receive EX panels.

Philips PML9308 Mini LED from Xtra-series

Slightly below Philips’ two new OLED lines is the new MiniLED TV series. The 9308 Mini-LED models , dubbed the “Xtra Series”, will ship in 55″ and 65″ screen sizes. Their maximum brightness will be 1000 nits thanks to a set of much smaller than conventional LEDs in the backlight.

At the time of writing, Philips has not disclosed how many local dimming zones the 9308 Mini LED series will use to provide more control over lighting. Most likely, such information may appear during product briefings over the next few days. It should be noted that 1000 nits isn’t really that bright by Mini LED TV standards.

On the other hand, it’s possible that Philips is taking a relatively inexpensive approach to technology compared to some of its competitors (especially Samsung). This pricing approach also seems to be supported by the fact that Xtra models are positioned lower in the lineup than OLED808 TVs.

However, the 9308 will still get the new 7th generation P5 image processor. Their panels will run at 120Hz and support a wide color gamut capable of covering the claimed 98% of the DCI color gamut. Adding to the promising picture performance is yet another audio system designed by Bowers & Wilkins.

This time, it’s an outstanding 64W 2.1-channel speaker system with fabric cover from Kvadrat. The Philips 9308 TVs won’t be available until the third quarter of 2023, but they should be interesting companions for new OLEDs once they’re released.

Philips PML9008 Mini LED

Philips also announced the release of a cheaper series of 9008 Mini LED TVs. They will be available in 55, 65 and 75-inch versions. They will also get a 7th generation P5 processor and a 120Hz panel with 1000 nits of brightness. However, their sound, which provides 40 watts on two channels, will be carried by a system other than Bowers & Wilkins.

Philips The One 2023

Recall that the term The One Philips gives those TVs that, according to the same Philips, provide the most attractive combination of features, performance and price. Both series (PUS8808 and PUS8508) will be equipped with wide color gamut LCD panels. However, the 8808 series will have a 120Hz panel that is comfortable for playing Dolby Vision 4K/120Hz games.

The 8508 series will be limited to the 60Hz panel. However, Philips claims that the 8508’s DLG and HRS technologies will enable 4K/120Hz sources to be played back with a quality approaching the smoothness and clarity of the original 120Hz panel. Both The One series will feature three-sided Ambilight versions.

Like OLED displays, the 8808 and 8508 models will migrate from previous Philips Android TV smart systems to Google TV. Expected to launch in the second quarter, the 8808 series will be available in 43″, 50″, 55″, 65″, 75″ and 85″ screen sizes. At the same time, models with a diagonal of 43 to 65 inches will receive central stands with the ability to rotate.

The bases of the two largest models will consist of two legs. The 8508 series will be available in 43″, 50″, 55″ and 65″ sizes. All these TVs will receive a stand of two height-adjustable feet in gray.

Philips hasn’t officially unveiled any new quantum dot OLED TVs at its latest TV event. On the other hand, the brand usually introduces a couple of new high-end TVs in the second half of the year. Most often this happens during the IFA exhibition in Berlin. So there is little chance of seeing the debut of Philips QD-OLED.
