Kent-based Classic Audio Ltd, led by audio specialist Michael Fiedler, has introduced the SPARTAN 15 MKII — an enhanced version of its acclaimed SPARTAN 15 MM phono preamplifier. Building on the original model’s success, the MKII offers a series of thoughtful upgrades while staying true to the brand’s core principles of precision analog design and uncompromising sonic transparency.
Enhanced Low-Frequency Control
The standout upgrade in the SPARTAN 15 MKII is its expanded low-frequency crossfeed functionality. Where the original version featured a fixed crossover at 145 Hz, the MKII introduces a three-position switch, allowing users to select between 100 Hz, 145 Hz, and 200 Hz. This added flexibility is particularly useful for minimizing bass rumble and fine-tuning playback of vintage or mono recordings. A dedicated mono switch also remains, helping to suppress stereo noise when needed.

Meticulous Craftsmanship
As with all Classic Audio products, the SPARTAN 15 MKII is hand-assembled in the company’s Kent facility using high-quality, through-hole components. Its updated enclosure now features a rounded, shot-peened aluminum chassis with seamlessly integrated front and rear panels. All labeling is laser-etched for durability and a clean aesthetic.
Internally, the MKII is engineered for long-term performance and precision. It employs Panasonic electrolytic capacitors, 1% metal film resistors, and high-grade polypropylene capacitors to ensure exceptional channel matching and signal stability.

Audiophile-Grade Performance
Performance has also seen a significant boost. The SPARTAN 15 MKII delivers a dynamic range of over 110 dB and a maximum output level of 10.5 V RMS. A third-order subsonic filter, tuned to 22 Hz with high-quality film capacitors, effectively eliminates ultra-low frequency noise while preserving bass clarity. The frequency response remains flat to within 0.1 dB down to 40 Hz.
Distortion is impressively low, with total harmonic distortion kept below 0.0006% from 40 Hz to 22 kHz. This is achieved by smartly distributing gain between input and output stages, minimizing signal degradation.
Intelligent Power Management
The MKII comes with an external 9V linear power supply, designed to eliminate the electromagnetic interference often associated with switching power adapters. A newly integrated overvoltage protection system ensures safe operation even with third-party power sources.
Under the hood, the preamp features precision-regulated ±17V power rails using reference diodes for optimal thermal stability and noise rejection. A relay-controlled mute circuit prevents pops and transients during startup, while the inherently stable architecture ensures peak performance within seconds—no lengthy warm-up required.
