Nikon releases firmware updates for Z 7, Z 6, Z 5 and Z 50

Nikon has announced the release of firmware for its mirrorless cameras: v.3.40 for Z 7 and Z 6 , v.1.20 for Z 5 and v.2.20 for Z 50 . Basically, the firmware improves the speed and accuracy of the autofocus with face and eye detection, including when shooting with Nikon Speedlight in low light. The firmware is already available for download on the Nikon website, and detailed instructions on the flashing procedure are also provided there.

In firmware v.3.40 for Nikon Z 7 and Z 6, the operation of eye detection autofocus has been improved when shooting from a long distance, moreover, the AF point will now be better visible on the screen when tracking a subject, and it will be better seen whether the autofocus has caught the eyes or not.

Added support for Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Bluetooth Classic (BTC). Also, this firmware pumps the capabilities of remote shooting to the computer, including the control of multiple cameras using the NX Field program, which previously worked only with the D5 and D6.

Main innovations in firmware v.3.40 for Nikon Z 7 and Z 6:

  • Added support
    • adapter FTZ II,
    • lens NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f / 4 S.
  • Reduced flickering on the display when shooting N-Log or RAW video with external HDMI recorders in low light.
  • Improved eye detection in auto-area and wide-area AF modes.
  • The refresh rate of the focus point displayed during face / eye detection and subject tracking has been increased.
  • Improved face / eye detection performance when shooting with Nikon Speedlights.
  • The following issues have been fixed:
    • Freezes at auto Picture Control.
    • The camera sometimes exceeded the selected maximum ISO for video.

Updates v.1.20 for Z 5 and v.2.20 for Z 50 are less voluminous:

  • Added support
    • adapter FTZ II,
    • lens NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f / 4 S.
  • Improved autofocus performance, including when shooting with flash.
