There has been talk for quite some time now about when Canon will open up the RF mount to companies like Sigma and Tamron. Sigma’s management in interviews repeatedly reported their interest in the production of lenses for RF-mount, but nothing specific, especially the timing, was not called.
Canonrumors seems confident that this will happen within the next 6-8 months. They claim that two lenses will be released initially: a fast medium focal length prime lens and some kind of zoom.
There is currently no exact information on what these optics are, but it is very likely that developments are already underway at Sigma, as legal issues are being resolved with Canon Inc.
For now, we can assume that the first lenses can be:
- Sigma 50mm f/1.4 (Art or Contemporary)
It is unlikely that we will see fast wide-angle lenses from Sigma to Canon. Canon is not yet interested in making its own 50mm f/1.4 lens.
- Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 OS DC
Fast zoom with RF-S mount.
This information came from an unknown source, so you should be skeptical about it. But we hope that more accurate information will appear in the next month or two.
And so far, there is no word on Tamron’s plans for the Canon RF.
