Sony has released a firmware update for its Sony FX3 mirrorless cameras – version number 3.00 and FX30  version 2.00. The main additions are 4K DCI video mode, in-camera anamorphic compression and 24p video recording.

4K DCI and 24p

The cameras allow you to record movies in 4K DCI format, which will be useful in editing, as 4K production provides additional space for reframing.

Added 24p recording function, this will be required for sharing files for film distribution or when sending to sites where this format is required. Also, this feature will not be superfluous for shooting with multiple cameras, if, for example, other cameras in the setup initially allow you to shoot in 24p.

Anamorphic compression

Added the ability to apply anamorphic compression for Sony FX3 and FX30. The cameras do not have anamorphic modes, but now the ability to view compressed images on the monitor of the camera itself has been added, and not just on an external monitor, which itself allows you to display such compression. Compression options are 1.33x and 2x only, no 1.5x or 1.8x options.

Compression options 1.33x and 2x are available both on the camera screen and on an external monitor connected via HDMI. You can activate compression options only when shooting in LOG, it is impossible to select compression options in the menu when shooting in some other format. Using anamorphic compression, it is not possible to use image stabilization.

Other add-ons

In addition to the new 4K DCI, 24p and anamorphic compression formats, Sony has also added features:

  • For FX3 – you can now select S&Q modes with a custom button.
  • The Sony Creators app now allows you to control your FX30 or FX3 camera wirelessly with the ability to connect to the Creators’ Cloud.
  • The camera ID and take number are now displayed in the same format as on other Sony cinema cameras.
