Huawei is back—and this time, it’s doing something no one else dared to do.
At its April 20 event, the company unveiled the Pura X Max, a foldable flagship that completely breaks away from the tall, narrow smartphone trend. Instead of chasing the same elongated displays as everyone else, Huawei went bold… and made it square.
Yes, square—and it might actually be brilliant.
Unfortunately, exact specifications are not yet available, but it’s safe to assume the aspect ratio is very close to 16:9, while most competitors have 19:9, 21:9, or similar ratios.
Finally, a Foldable That Feels Like a Mini Tablet
The first thing you notice is the outer display. At 5.4 inches, it doesn’t stretch vertically like most modern phones. Instead, it leans toward a near 16:9 aspect ratio, making it feel more like a compact tablet than a traditional smartphone.
Open it up, and things get even more interesting.
Inside, you’re greeted by a 7.7-inch display that’s noticeably wider than what you get on competing foldables. The result? A screen that’s far better suited for watching movies, scrolling content, or even gaming—without the awkward black bars or cramped layouts.
In short, Huawei may have just fixed one of the biggest problems with foldables.
Huawei Might Be Ahead of Apple and Samsung
Here’s where it gets even more intriguing. Rumors suggest both Apple and Samsung are working on wider, more “square-like” foldables in the near future.
Huawei just got there first.
If this form factor catches on, the Pura X Max could be remembered as the device that shifted the entire direction of foldable design.
However, it’s not just the screens that deserve attention—the back of the device also boasts a rather impressive camera system, occupying almost the entire display from edge to edge.
A Camera System That Dominates the Back
Flip the phone over, and you’re met with a massive, edge-to-edge camera module that looks as serious as it sounds.
The setup includes:
- A 50MP main camera with variable aperture (f/1.4–4.0) and OIS
- A 50MP telephoto lens with OIS
- A 12.5MP ultra-wide camera
- Plus a dedicated color sensor for improved accuracy
This isn’t just a foldable—it’s clearly aiming to compete with top-tier camera phones.
Big Battery, Fast Charging, No Compromises
Huawei didn’t hold back on power either.
Inside, the Pura X Max packs a 5,300mAh battery, paired with:
- 66W wired fast charging
- 40W wireless charging
- 7.5W reverse wireless charging
That’s flagship-level endurance with charging speeds to match.
Bonus: Stylus Support and a Performance Boost
The device also supports the M-Pen 3 Mini, letting you control the phone with gestures, scroll remotely, and interact in ways most foldables still don’t offer.
Powering everything is the new Kirin 9030 Pro, delivering around 25% more performance compared to the previous generation—another solid jump forward.
Interestingly, the model supports 40W wireless charging and 7.5W reverse wireless charging.
The Catch
There is one downside—for now.
The Pura X Max will only be available in China at launch, meaning global users may have to wait… or miss out entirely.
