Samsung has announced that select QD – OLED TVs , including the flagship S95D QD-OLED model, now support HDMI 2.1’s Quick Media Switching (QMS) feature . After years of waiting and the final revision of the QMS specification as part of HDMI version 2.1a, LG has become the first TV maker to roll out QMS support with the release of compatible C3, G3 and other OLED TVs in 2023.
QMS support ensures that the TV and a compatible media player (currently only the Apple TV 4K 3rd generation from 2022) can seamlessly switch frame rates without any intermediate “black screens,” known as HDMI bonks. This ensures flicker-free playback when viewers switch between movies (24 fps), TV shows (25, 30, 50, or 60 fps), and other types of content. Note that QMS does not eliminate “black screens” when switching between SDR/HDR10/DV content. In the HDMI 2.1a specification, this functionality is called QMS-VRR, as it relies on VRR (variable refresh rate).
The QMS feature definitely works on the Samsung QD – OLED S95D TV . The feature is also rumored to be supported on the 2023 S95C QD-OLED model via a firmware update. Hopefully, Samsung will release a full list of QMS-compatible models soon. It is not yet known when QMS will debut on TV models from other major brands such as Sony, TCL, Hisense, Panasonic, and Philips.
