In addition to expensive OLED TVs, NanoCell 4K and 8K, LG also offers a wide selection of inexpensive 4K TVs with conventional LCDs. Are you really looking for a great TV? In the new UN8500 series, the Korean electronics company LG has released 3 huge 4K TVs with screen sizes of 75 inches (189 cm), 82 inches (208 cm) and 86 inches (217 cm).

The models have a 100Hz panel with direct LED backlighting and support Dolby Vision IQ and Dolby Atmos. Also, these TVs are equipped with extensive SmartTV functions and voice control. In the proposed LG 75UN85006 4K HDR review, using the smallest diagonal as an example, we will consider the pros and cons of the UN85 series.

LG UN8500 review

Design

After removing the huge 75 ” model from its packaging, immediately attach the supplied legs to it. It is advisable to carry out the installation with two people to avoid damage to the display. The legs must be fixed with two screws to the base of the case. Wall mounting is also possible. Suitable VESA 600 x 400 wall mount not included.

Overall, the LG 75UN85006LA TV makes a good impression as it looks gorgeous. The body is made entirely of plastic and the legs are made of metal. The 75-inch model isn’t exactly a slim TV because of the direct LED backlighting.

The case is almost 10 cm thick. The package includes: LG TV 75 “, 1 pair of metal feet, 1 Magic Remote, 2 batteries, 1 power cord, 1 user manual.

Image quality

The 75UN85006 is equipped with a 3840 x 2160 Ultra HD display with a native refresh rate of 100 Hz and direct LED backlighting. The UN8500 models use an IPS panel . Its main advantages over VA panel are higher stability, wider viewing angles and excellent color rendering.

The only drawback of this panel is poor contrast. This drawback is especially evident when viewing high-contrast images in a dark room. Thanks to the Direct backlight, the display is evenly lit. The glow effect is still there, but it’s barely noticeable. Slight differences in picture uniformity can only be seen in very bright areas.

HDR encoded movies are automatically recognized by UN85006 TV. It is also possible to play the movie in ” Filmmaker Mode” , that is, in the original cinematic quality. In this mode, image optimization programs such as contrast enhancer, motion smoothing, and noise reduction are disabled.

As a result, only the original color and contrast values are used. As the overall image brightness decreases, it is recommended to darken the room. In daylight or bright light, it is recommended to set picture modes such as “HDR-Effect” or “Expert (bright room)”.

The TV shows excellent results when watching 4K content. Content below 4K looks very good too. However, for this it is worth giving preference to HD channels. On SD quality channels, the image may look slightly washed out. The content with dynamic scenes is also reproduced quite well.

UN8500 TVs can also be used as a monitor. In “Game” picture mode, the input delay is reduced to 20 ms. 4K resolution with refresh rates of up to 120 frames per second helps ensure uninterrupted playback in PC games. This requires a powerful gaming PC with a modern high-end graphics card (Nvidia TITAN RTX). HDR and HGiG are also supported.

Sound quality

When it comes to sound, home theater lovers are going to have a tough time. On the other hand, many already have home theater systems, and the UN8500 sounds pretty good for a TV. The 2.0-channel sound system does an excellent job of reproducing dialogue. The sound system simply lacks the necessary power to watch music videos and action movies.

Home theater fans can be advised to get the LG SL10Y wireless soundbar . This is a powerful 3.1.2 channel sound system with Dolby Atmos with a total output of 440 watts. The soundbar not only sounds good, but is also easy to operate with the LG TV remote control.

Smart TV

UN8500 series TVs are equipped with the latest generation SmartTV. It is a webOS 5.0 operating system with an intuitive Magic Remote AN-MR20GA. The Magic Remote combines a conventional “remote with number keys”, an optical-pointing mouse and a built-in microphone for voice control.

In addition to LG’s voice assistant, Amazon Alexa is also supported. The webOS operating system runs smoothly. It is equipped with all the major streaming services such as Amazon Prime Video, Disney + and Netflix. The triple tuner is suitable for all types of TV reception (DVB-C / T2 / S2).

It takes less than 2 seconds to switch channels. With PayTV channels only, the switch operation takes a little longer due to CI + decryption. By connecting a suitable USB hard drive, the running program can be paused or recorded.

Connections

The model has enough connection options. A total of 2 HDMI 2.0 connectors (rear) and 2 HDMI 2.1 connectors (side), TosLink optical output, three USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet RJ45 line-in, and analog AV-in (RCA) are available.

If you are using a wall bracket, you will need a dedicated angled antenna connector. For paid programs, a CI + 1.4 slot is provided on the side panel. There is no line-out for connecting headphones. Wireless connections can be made via Bluetooth 5.0 or Wi-Fi.

Conclusion

To conclude our review of the UN85006 from LG, it remains to add that the TV impresses with its crisp images, vibrant colors and wide viewing angles. The equipment with numerous SmartTV functions, voice control and fast triple tuner leaves nothing to be desired. UN8500 can be recommended for purchase for large, bright rooms, since this TV does not have a sufficient level of contrast.
