Philips offers a series of relatively inexpensive The One TVs that it considers true all-in-one TVs. These are the Philips PUS8808 TVs for streaming, gaming and TV that are inexpensive but are going to impress in terms of picture quality, sound and plenty of features.
Although often referred to as The One, the model is called 65PUS8818/12. This is a 65-inch LED TV that is also available in sizes ranging from 43 to 85 inches. Does this concept work, and is there room for improvement? Is it worth buying Philips PUS8818? In our Philips 65PUS8808 4K HDR review, we will try to answer these and other questions.
Philips PUS8818 review
At first glance, the design of the Philips 65PUS8818/12 TV is very impressive. The center stand contributes significantly to this look as it looks simply elegant while at the same time helping to keep cables organized at the back. In addition, it can be rotated.
If you look closely, you can see some savings. The comparable-priced Samsung Q60C has slightly narrower display edges. The same applies to the thickness of the frame. However, the most noticeable thing is the infrared receiver, which probably didn’t find room in the wider bottom edge and therefore sticks out a bit.
In profile, the Philips PUS8818 TV is also slightly wider than its competitors. However, this depends on the built-in Ambilight. When seated in the front position, the design remains elegant and the workmanship remains of a consistently high standard. If you want to attach the TV to the wall, you will need a VESA 300 x 300 mm bracket.
In terms of TV operating system, the Philips 8818 uses Google TV. The initial setup is particularly easy, as is the entire process. But the biggest advantage of Google TV is the number of video streaming apps. As with Sony TVs, you can find whatever your heart desires here.
Even cloud gaming is included. You can also stream your games via GeForce Now. Fortunately, there are also some recommendations that become more personal over time. Instead of being annoying, these recommendations actually help you discover new movies and TV shows.
The Philips 8818/12 TV also takes many of the advantages of its larger OLED siblings when it comes to features. There is voice control via Google Assistant. You can also use the Alexa assistant. On the other hand, there is control using a remote control.
The remote control works quite quickly. It has all the buttons you need in everyday life in an elegant way, be it buttons for watching TV or for streaming. There are also direct selection buttons for Prime Video, YouTube, Netflix. There is no backlighting of the buttons. This flaw also applies to many other TVs, such as the best models among LG TVs.
The sound quality on the 65PUS8818/12 TV is very good for models at this price. The sound is quite powerful and clear. On the other hand, you shouldn’t expect deep bass. Although the total output power is 40 W, the four built-in speakers form a 2.0 sound system .
If this sound quality doesn’t seem enough, you can connect to an external speaker system via HDMI eARC or optical output from your TV, or use DTS-Play-Fi to connect compatible multi-room speakers. For older adults and people with hearing impairments, it is possible to create a personalized hearing profile using the Mimi app. This does not require any additional costs.
The picture on the Philips PUS8818/12 TV makes a really good impression. Ambilight rivals Samsung’s more basic QLED TVs, such as the Samsung Q60C. Of course, this picture doesn’t come close to an OLED TV, but it does provide very decent picture quality for TV, streaming and gaming.
For realistic images, we recommend the Cinema picture mode, which provides the most balanced colors without adding artificial harshness. This is the best option for watching movies with images that look almost the same as those in the cinema. Home theater picture mode is also taken into account in everyday life.
It’s less neutral but looks crisper and fresher. Ambilight illumination from three sides enhances the visual effect. In a darkened room, when watching quality DVD or Blu-ray movies, you should reduce the preset screen brightness to about half using the advanced contrast settings to achieve a good picture experience.
The Philips 8818/12 LCD TV handles 4K images with wide dynamic range very cleverly. To do this, it adjusts the image brightness and backlight according to its technical capabilities, so as to ensure virtually no loss of any detail.
With a peak brightness of up to 520 candelas per square meter, the TV delivers highly contrasting and bright images. It also helps if you watch TV during the daytime. However, you can only see the best quality image when viewing from a right angle. As usual with VA panels , the optimal viewing angle is relatively narrow.
The advantages of the built-in screen are almost uniform illumination and an expanded color space for HDR. The Philips PUS 8818 TV is impressive to watch in both dark and bright scenes, but it can’t offer the inky blacks and vibrant highlights of OLED TVs.
What’s also great when watching movies is that, thanks to the 120Hz panel, inter-frame timing for smooth moving images is rarely an issue. And, of course, the panel has another plus. This is a three-sided Ambilight. LEDs attached to the back panel paint the wall behind the TV in colors that match the content of the image. Thanks to this, the impression of the image seems even stronger.
The high refresh rate required when playing on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X may not be significant, but it is definitely a big plus. Some games run at a smooth 120 frames per second. For this, it is better to have a gaming TV with a frequency of 120 Hz, and, of course, with the lowest possible input lag.
Input lag on the PUS8818/12 TV is a lightning-fast eight milliseconds at 120Hz and 17 milliseconds at 60Hz. This is where the Philips PUS8818 is significantly ahead of the Samsung Q60C. There are also VRR and ALLM functions.
The Philips 65PUS8818/12 TV has four HDMI ports. Two of these four ports are HDMI 2.1. They provide all the necessary gaming functions and support variable frequency up to 120 Hz. There’s also a 3.5mm line-in headphone connection, a digital optical audio output, a pair of USB ports, an Ethernet port, and a CI+ slot. Wireless connections include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0.
By purchasing the Philips PUS8818, you get a TV at a relatively low price that impresses with picture and sound in everyday life, and also supports games. In addition, the user receives a truly powerful set of functions.
With Google TV, streaming fans will get their money’s worth. Game lovers will be pleased with the many features and, above all, the 120Hz refresh rate. And, of course, don’t forget about Ambilight, which illuminates the wall behind the TV.
When it comes to images, you just need to set your expectations correctly. If you’re expecting the brightest backlights or vibrant colors in HDR, you’ll want to look for the best QLED or OLED TVs at a significantly higher price point.
